As some of you may know, I work for ADAM Association, a volutary welfare organisation (VWO) dedicated to addressing the issues faced by men in Singapore. Most of these issues relate to marriage, divorce, family, and parenting, and, yes, a significant proportion of people who come to us are Malay-Muslims. That does not mean that we do not serve men of other races and religions who approach us with their problems. In fact, it does not mean that we only help men with their issues and challenges faced; in many cases, helping these men means making life that much better for their spouses and children.
ADAM Association, along with Just Parenting Association (JPA), our sister organisation, which is dedicated to the promotion of a healthy, harmonious and successful family life through enabling more effective parenting, will be embarking on a fundrasing drive very soon. Come 21 January 2011, we will be holding our Joint Flag Day. That’s right, Chinese New Year’s eve eve, so here’s a chance to share some goodwill this festive season.
In the month leading up to the flag day, we will be collecting donations to fund the running cost of the flag day from friends and family using donation pledge cards. Funds raised through the flag day collections and any access funds from the pledge cards collections will go towards funding the two organisation’s operational costs as well as programme costs. These include the running cost of the WAHAH Transitional Shelter for Displaced Families by JPA and ADAM Association’s Helpline for Men, Tattoo-Removal Programme and Free Legal Clinic. Both organisations are also looking into rolling out more programmes such as a character-building programme for men, peer support groups and effective parenting workshops in the months ahead. Finally, some of this money goes into making sure people like me get paid for our work.
So, here’s how you can help:
- Volunteer to be one of our donation can bearers for the flag day. We’ll be focusing our efforts on the Orchard Road, City Hall and Chinatown areas, to catch all the last minute Chinese New Year shoppers. If you cannot commit your whole Saturday to us, you can choose to do either the early shift (10 A.M. to 3 P.M.) or the late shift (2 P.M. to 7 P.M.) Please let me know by 9 January 2012 if you would like to commit your time to the flag day.
- Grab hold of some donation pledge cards and convince your friends, family members and co-workers to contribute to this cause. You can contribute, too, if you wish. To make it easier for you, just let me know how many cards you want and I’ll find a way to personally get them to you. Same thing when you have completed cards; just let me know and I’ll find a way to personally get them and the money you have collected from you. Remember, the collection period will be from 21 December 2011 to 20 January 2012.
With my birthday fast approaching, consider this my personal appeal to all of you for your support and let’s spread some of the joy around this festive season! Thank you for reading this far. My best wishes to you and yours, whether or not you decide to respond to this post.
